How do I change my primary email address for my microsoft account?

Under my primary email address according to account.live.com i have this message:

"Your organization's policies prevent you from changing your primary username."

I do not have an organization that I belong to.

However, I do have an email that belongs to "sympatico" domain. At one point, Microsoft was doing the email administration for sympatico (part of Bell Email). Perhaps this is the reference to belonging to an organization that has policies that will not permit me to remove my primary email address.

I am going to terminate my sympatico email account and I won't get messages from microsoft if they still believe that sympatico is my primary email address. Also, it seems "silly" to continue to sign in under my "sympatico" email when it is not going to exist in the coming days.

Thanks for the details. Have you already added a new personal email alias to your Microsoft account and verified it under Your info at account.microsoft.com?

If the sympatico address is the primary sign-in and tied to legacy domain rules, Microsoft blocks changing it directly. The official steps are to add and verify a new alias, set it as primary, then remove the old one. If the system still shows the policy message and will not let you switch the primary alias, you need to contact Microsoft support to update it on their side so your sign-in and notifications move to your new email.
