I have paid for a family 365 subscription for years but have never shared it with anyone. I wish to convert to a personal 365 subscription but can find no way to do this. I was misled by the Microsoft chatbot and have not only failed to find a way to make this change, but have also lost my Classic subscription access - I have no need or desire for an AI subscription. As a result I am now paying even more per month, which is not ideal given I am retired and trying to limit expenses. I have been caught in the Australian subscription issue. Can anyone offer advice as to how to fix this, please?

To convert from a Microsoft 365 Family subscription to a Personal subscription, you typically need to follow these steps:

    1. Cancel the Family Subscription: Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and cancel your Family subscription. This will stop the recurring billing for the Family plan.
    2. Purchase a Personal Subscription: After canceling the Family plan, you can purchase a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription. This can be done through the Microsoft website or the Microsoft Store.
    3. Check for License Availability: Ensure that you have enough licenses assigned to your account if you are managing multiple subscriptions.

If you encounter issues or if your subscription has changed unexpectedly, it may be helpful to contact Microsoft Support for assistance. They can provide guidance specific to your account situation and help resolve any billing issues you may be facing.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Just to clarify, there’s currently no direct “convert” button that switches a Microsoft 365 Family subscription to a Personal one. Instead, what usually happens is you turn off recurring billing for the Family plan and then wait for it to expire, at which point you can purchase the Personal plan instead.

    Here’s what I suggest doing:

    • Check your current subscription status > Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and confirm which subscription is active.
    • Turn off recurring billing for the Family plan > This ensures you won’t be charged again.
    • Once it expires, you’ll be able to purchase Microsoft 365 Personal normally.

Since you also mentioned being affected by the Australian subscription changes and losing access to your Classic features, I recommend contacting Microsoft Support directly so they can review your account and help restore the correct plan or issue a refund if applicable. The support team can see the details on your account and make adjustments we can’t do from here.

    • Here is the link: https://support.microsoft.com/home/contact
    • Type this keyword and press Enter: Contact Support.
    • At the bottom, click "Sign in to contact support" and sign in with your Personal Microsoft account (Not work or school account), or click "Contact Support" if you're already signed in.
    • In Product and services, select "Microsoft 365 and Office".
    • In Category, select "Manage my subscription".
    • Click "Chat with a support agent in your web browser".

If you ever find yourself stuck in a loop, please use the keywords "Contact Support" or "Live Chat" (without the quotes) and click "Contact Support" at the bottom.

I know this process can feel exhausting, and I truly hope it gets resolved quickly for you.

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.
