I am trying to log into and check my school email to get information about it the upcoming semester. In order to log in, it sends me to the app to authenticate with a 2 digit code. But I just got a new phone and when I get into the app it wants me to sign into my school account and verify it through the app… that I can’t log into without getting into the app. Moved from: Microsoft Security | Microsoft Authenticator

To resolve the issue with logging into your school account after getting a new phone, follow these steps:

    1. Check Account Recovery Options: If you have set up other options for security verification, you can select Other verification options during the login process. This may allow you to authenticate using a different method.
    2. Use a Backup Method: If you have configured multiple verification methods, try using a different one (like a phone call or text message) to receive your verification code instead of relying solely on the Authenticator app.
    3. Reinstall the Authenticator App: If you haven't done so already, try reinstalling the Microsoft Authenticator app on your new phone. After reinstalling, you can set it up again, but you may need to access your account settings through a web browser to re-link the app.
    4. Contact Support: If you are still unable to access your account, consider reaching out to your school's IT support for assistance. They may be able to help you reset your authentication settings or provide alternative methods to log in.
    5. Use the Microsoft Authenticator App: The app can generate verification codes even without a signal, so if you can access it, you might be able to use it to log in. Make sure your phone numbers are correct in your user account settings.

By following these steps, you should be able to regain access to your school account and check your email for information about the upcoming semester.

    Hello @Graham Skillin

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Community!

Thank you for contacting us regarding the difficulties you are experiencing while attempting to access your school account on your new device. Based on the information provided, it appears that the Microsoft Authenticator application is requesting verification, which is creating a circular process preventing you from signing in. This situation typically occurs when Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is still associated with your previous device and has not yet been updated for your new phone.

To resolve this issue, when you reach the sign-in page, look for an option such as “Sign in another way” or “I cannot use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now.” If these options are available, select them and choose an alternative verification method such as text message, email confirmation, or any other backup method that may have been configured previously.

If you do not have access to an alternate sign-in method or a backup, your school’s IT department will need to reset your MFA configuration. This process will remove the association with your old device and allow you to register your new phone.

Therefore, kindly ask the one who is having the Admin permission to help you reset your MFA settings through the Microsoft Entra Admin Center.

If you’re unsure who the Admin is within your school, you can find guidance on locating them here: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

Please have your administrator follow the steps shown in the following article: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multi-factor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID …

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as at least an Authentication Administrator
    2. User > all user.  Select the user you want to act on, and select Authentication methods. then select Require re-register of multi-factor authentication.

Require re-register MFA:  This disables all previous authentication methods. You'll then be prompted to configure a new MFA authentication method the next time you try to sign in, so you can add a new authenticator app.
