The ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR can often be related to issues with the browser settings or network configurations. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue in Microsoft Edge and Opera GX:

    1. Check Date and Time Settings: Ensure that your computer's date and time are set correctly, as incorrect settings can lead to SSL errors.
    2. Clear Browser Cache: Sometimes, cached data can cause issues. Clear the cache and cookies in both browsers.
      • For Edge, go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data.
      • For Opera GX, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Clear browsing data.
    3. Disable Extensions: Some browser extensions can interfere with SSL connections. Try disabling all extensions and see if that resolves the issue.
    4. Reset Browser Settings: Resetting the browser settings to default can help resolve configuration issues.
      • For Edge, go to Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values.
      • For Opera GX, go to Settings > Advanced > Reset settings.
    5. Check Firewall and Antivirus Settings: Ensure that your firewall or antivirus software is not blocking the connection. You may need to temporarily disable them to test if they are the cause.
    6. Update Network Drivers: Since you rolled back your graphics driver, ensure that your network drivers are also up to date. You can do this through Device Manager.
    7. Try Different DNS Settings: Switching to a public DNS like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) can sometimes resolve connection issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to check for any known issues with the specific versions of the browsers you are using.

Hi Peter, See if a Network Reset helps.

    • Close all apps and save work
    • Open Settings
    • Go to Network & Internet
    • Scroll down and select Network reset
    • Click Reset now
    • Confirm by selecting Yes
    • The PC will restart automatically
    • All network adapters are reinstalled
    • Wi-Fi networks, VPNs, and custom IP/DNS settings are removed
    • Reconnect to Wi-Fi and reconfigure VPN or proxy if used

I’m eager to hear back and work together to find a solution.

Thank you, does the issue persist with other networks as well?

    Alright.

Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.

Under Fix problems using Windows Update, choose Reinstall now.

In the reinstall window, decide whether to let the PC restart automatically 15 minutes after installation.

Select OK to begin the reinstall process.

Windows Update will download and install a repair version of the last successfully installed update.

After installation finishes, restart your PC if you didn’t enable automatic restart.

    Hi Peter,

    Via https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5490097/how-to-fix-err-ssl-protocol-error

    Run msconfig: (aka system Configuration)

    Go to Services

    Check Hide Microsoft services

Disable any unfamiliar services (especially security tools, proxies, VPNs)

Also go to Startup tab in Task Manager and disable suspicious entries.

I unchecked these 4 services called: Killer smart AP selection service, KIller Analytics service, Killer Network service, and Killer Dynamic Bandwidth management.

hit apply then restarted pc and it was completely fixed.

If anyone is having this same crazy issue this is 100% the way to fix it. It may not be the same killer service name but look for something not normal. make sure to check Hide Microsoft service to make it easy to find the problem.

I’m eager to hear back and work together to find a solution.
