Tim Jones has recently published a Visual Studio extension that adds a number of features to the HLSL editor - HLSL Tools for Visual Studio. Read the announcement for details on what's available: much better navigation and errors as you type are my two favorites.
You can find the extension in the Visual Studio Gallery as well as a GitHub repo.
Are there other tools you're using to work with shader code? Let me know in comments!

Thanks Marcelo! I appreciate the mention. And thank you too for all your help with HLSL Tools, without which I'd be even more ignorant about the finer points of HLSL syntax than I am :)
