Post-sale monetization

Important

This topic describes features that are only available to Managed Creators with appropriate permissions. For details, speak to your Microsoft contacts.

Post-sale monetization (PSM) is the process of making add-on content (also known as downloadable content or DLC) available to players after the release of your game. Add-on content can include:

  • Durable products, such as map packs, cosmetics and game expansions.
  • Consumable products, such as in-game virtual currency.
  • Collections of durables and consumables sold as add-on bundles or as a Season Pass.

For guidance about selecting the right product type, see Choosing the right product type.

Recommendations for PSM

For games that offer post-launch content, Games-as-a-Service (Gaas), or free-to-play games, Xbox empowers Creators with the ability to offer post-sale monetization. This helps provide additional exposure opportunities for your game, as well as opportunities for your players to purchase and continue to engage with your product.

We strongly recommend sharing your PSM roadmap with your Microsoft contacts as early as possible. If your Microsoft contacts are aware of your plans, it'll enable them to provide the most relevant and impactful recommendations for the Microsoft Store.

Your Microsoft contacts can:

  • Review offers, release cadences, and value plans with experts on the Microsoft Store team.
  • Guide you on best practices for potential plans and offerings.
  • Advise you on seeding virtual currency, cross-title DLC transfers, policies, and other opportunities.

Submitting PSM plans for approval

Similar to SKU plans, your PSM plans might need to be reviewed and approved by your Microsoft contacts. Share your plans during the SKU planning phase or as soon as the information is available, to ensure that your timeline and goals can be met. The Xbox Games Store Policy (available in the Xbox Publisher Guide) includes guidance for PSM. If you need additional information or clarity, speak to your Microsoft contacts.

Requirements for Season Pass

A Season Pass is a bundle of add-ons delivered to a player at a regular cadence or within a predefined amount of time. A Season Pass enables you to sell multiple add-ons in one transaction, thereby allowing the player to commit to the full digital roadmap of add-ons included in the Season Pass. Many Creators also include a Season Pass in specific bundle editions of their game, for example a Special Edition or Collector's Edition. For details, see SKU planning.

To use the Season Pass product type, you must have a valid Season Pass Agreement and a Season Pass plan that has been reviewed and approved by your Microsoft contacts. To formalize the proposal and submit it for approval, use the Season Pass Guide and Parts List available in the Xbox Publisher Guide.
