Reducing the size of an Excel workbook is essential when you need to upload it to Power BI. Excel workbooks must be smaller than 1 GB to upload to Power BI, and core worksheet contents should not exceed 30 MB to view in Excel for the web through OneDrive for work or school.
This article explains practical techniques to reduce your Excel workbook size so you can successfully upload and view it in Power BI.
What makes core worksheet contents larger than 30 MB
Here are some elements that can make the core worksheet contents larger than 30 MB:
- Images
- Shaded cells
- Colored worksheets
- Text boxes
- Clip art
Consider removing these elements, if possible.
If the report has a data model, you can reduce the overall size of the report using information in Create a memory-efficient Data Model using Excel and the Power Pivot add-in.
You can also refer to File size limits for Excel workbooks in SharePoint.
Use the workbook size optimizer tool
If your workbook contains a data model, you can run the workbook size optimizer to reduce the size of your workbook. For more information, see Download Workbook Size Optimizer.
