Common Scenarios that Use DLNA Devices (Compact 7)

DLNA defines the usage and pairing of media devices from different device classes. Windows Embedded Compact 7 supports both the DLNA 2-box model for DMP, and the DLNA 3-box model for DMC or DMR.

Typical Media Device Scenario

The following figure shows a typical home-networked media device scenario with Windows 7, Windows Embedded Compact 7, and devices from other manufacturers, including mobile devices. The devices are joined in the network via both wired and wireless connections.

2-Box Pull System

In the 2-box pull system, as shown in the following figure, local rendering of media content takes place when the DMP pulls media content from a DMS.

Regardless of the manufacturer of the media device, the user scenarios are as follows:

  • From any DMP device, the user looks for available DMS devices on the same network.
  • After the DMS devices are found, the DMP device browses media items from any specific DMS.
  • After a DMP device browses media items from any specific DMS, you can render it on the DMP device locally.

A 2-box pull system.

3-Box System

The 3-box system, as shown in the following figure, uses a DMC/M-DMC to find devices and browse media content from a DMS, and then push the media content to render on a DMR. The DMC/M-DMC is responsible for ensuring that the selected DMR can render the selected media item.

Regardless of the manufacturer of the media device, the user scenarios are:

  1. From any DMC device, the user looks for available DMS and DMR devices on the same network.
  2. After the DMS devices are found, the DMC device user browses media items from any specific DMS.
  3. The user pushes a media item to any DMR on the network. The media should render seamlessly on the DMR device.
