Extensibility changes in finance and operations version 8.0

Hard-sealed application models

In Dynamics 365 for finance and operations version 8.0, Microsoft hard-sealed all of its application models. Overlayered code in these models now produces compilation errors. The only supported customization model is through extensions. If you can't customize these models through extension, you need to request Microsoft to enable extensibility by changing the standard application.

Extensible enumerations

The following changes support extending enumerations:

  • Many enumerations in the standard application are now extensible. Make an enumeration extensible by setting two properties on the enumeration. Set the IsExtensible property to Yes, and set the UseEnumValue property to No.
  • Some enumerations represent state. Add new façade methods to help enable adding enumeration values by extension. For information about how to extend an enumeration, see Add values to enums through extension.
  • Change some application code that uses enumerations to support extensibility. Common changes include:
    • Remove throw exception statements in the default case of a switch to allow post-event subscription.
    • Add SysExtension support for extension.
    • Add explicit delegates.

Data manipulation methods that don't raise DataEvents or missing insert, update, and delete pre- and post-data events

As a general practice, use data methods on tables to raise events that you can use to extend the application. However, the code base doesn't always follow this practice. For example, the doInsert, doUpdate, and doDelete data methods and certain table implementations don't call super() in the data method.

The insert, update, and delete methods on the type classes are refactored. These changes make sure that super() is called more consistently in data methods. By using these changes, you can add extensions to these methods. The pre- and post-events are now available for extension. The following table lists the tables where the insert, update, and delete events are enabled for extension.
