Use the BackupDirectory property to specify a location other than the default directory location when running multiple instances of Microsoft SQL Server.
By default, the default instance of SQL Server 2000 stores backup files in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Mssql\Backup directory. By default, a named instance of SQL Server 2000 stores backup files in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Mssql$InstanceName\Backup directory, where InstanceName is the name of a nondefault instance of SQL Server.
Note BackupDirectory can be used with Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and later.
